Plan your project

This page shows you how to plan a site with your AI client before anything is built, and which files keep that plan for every later session.

A page built on a clear brief needs fewer rounds. A page built on a guess gets rebuilt.

Prerequisites

Start with the brief

Ask for the unblock-site-brief skill, and replace each {placeholder} with your own words:

Use the unblock-site-brief skill.
I'm starting a site for {business}, {what it does} in {place}.
It's for {audience}, who come to {what they want to do}.
The one action that matters is {book / buy / call / visit}, and I'll count it by {how}.
Here is what I already have: {old site URL, brochure, notes}.
Sites I like: {URL} for {what you like}, {URL} for {what you like}.
Draft the kit, mark your guesses, and wait for my confirmation before building anything.

The same skill plans a redesign, from the pages the site already has, and adds a single page to the sitemap.

What the skill reads

Before asking anything, the skill reads what the site already has: its title and front page, the existing pages and posts, the theme's templates, the CSS tokens when a design system exists, the plugins installed, and the post types, taxonomies and field groups. Without MCP, it plans from the conversation only, and says so.

The interview

The skill sends one message with six questions at most:

  1. What the business is, and where it operates.
  2. Who the site is for, and what each audience comes to do.
  3. The one action that matters most, and how you'll count it.
  4. The pages you think you need, or the old site this one replaces.
  5. Sites you like, and what you like in each one.
  6. Fixed points and limits: logo, brand colors, fonts, photos, languages, legal needs, deadline.

Give it what you already have instead: an old site, a brochure, notes. It reads them first and doesn't ask what they answer.

Then it stops asking and drafts the kit. Each guess is marked [Assumption], each unknown [To confirm: …]. When you ask for invented content, for a demo, each made-up value is marked [Invented] and listed for replacement before launch.

The confirmation

The skill shows a summary on one screen: the goal, the audiences, the pages with their main action, the setup steps left to you, the assumptions and the open questions. You confirm it or correct it.

Before your confirmation, the skill creates no page, writes no CSS, installs no font and changes no setting. Your confirmation also approves the setup the brief lists, such as the plugins to install, and the header and footer, which the agent builds with the first page and which show on the site at once: it doesn't ask for each one again.

Where the kit goes

By default, the skill writes the kit in a new folder named after the site, inside the folder your session runs in, such as fournil-rouge/. When that folder holds another project, it asks you first.

Start your next sessions in the kit's folder, so your client reads AGENTS.md.

A client without files, such as claude.ai or ChatGPT, gives each file in its reply. Add them to your project's knowledge in the client, so later sessions read them.

The planning kit

AGENTS.mdThe project in one sentence, the site, the MCP server's name in your client, where the kit is, the order of work, your rulesunblock-site-brief

The design and page skills read the kit before they work, and don't ask its questions again.

design.md records the design system, but the site's CSS stays the source of truth: the skills read it back with unblock/get-css.

Keep AGENTS.md short. Its Rules list starts empty: add a rule when an agent repeats a mistake.

Fill the kit by hand

The templates are in the skills/unblock-site-brief/assets/ folder of the repository. You can fill them yourself instead of running the interview. Keep their headings, as the skill does.

What the brief sets up

The brief's Setup section lists what must be in place before building, and who does it.

Once you confirm, the agent sets the site's title, tagline, front page and timezone, installs the plugins you approved from WordPress.org, and creates the post types, taxonomies and custom fields through your field plugin.

You do what no tool can: install a plugin WordPress won't install from MCP, a theme, a language pack, and anything outside WordPress, such as the domain or the email accounts.

On a new site, the skill recommends the Unblock theme when the active theme is a default WordPress theme or brings a strong design of its own. It's blank, so every style comes from your design system. You install it yourself, from your Unblock account.

When the site has no SEO plugin, the skill asks which one you want: Yoast SEO, Rank Math, SEOPress, All in One SEO or none, with what each lets the agent do. With any of the four, the agent writes each page's SEO title and meta description. With Rank Math, you run its setup wizard; with SEOPress, you turn on its abilities for a page's social texts. See SEO.

Then the design system

Once you confirm the brief, the next step is unblock-design-system, unless your site already has a design system you want to keep:

Use the unblock-design-system skill, from brief.md.
Propose three directions that differ in ground, type and density, each tied to facts about
{the subject}. No code until I pick one.
Fixed points: {logo, brand colors, fonts}, or none.
I'd like it to feel {two or three precise words}, and not like {what you want to avoid}.

The skill proposes three art directions, each with its palette, type, composition, imagery and one signature element. When the pages need temporary photos, it chooses them first, once for the whole site, and adds them to the media library marked as temporary.

Then it builds the first screen of the home page once per direction on one draft page, and gives you the draft's preview link: you compare the three on your own screen. You pick one, or mix them: this is the second stop.

Then it writes the tokens in :root, checks the contrast of each text and background pair, and records the system in design.md. On a new site with the Unblock theme, it sets the same fonts and palette in the theme's global styles, so the header, the footer and the WordPress blocks share the look. With another theme, it asks you first: that theme's own templates change with them.

Prompts

The prompts/ folder of the repository holds ready-to-use prompts, grouped by job, each paired with the skill it runs:

JobFileRuns
Plan the siteplan.mdunblock-site-brief
Set the lookstyle.mdunblock-design-system
Build pagesbuild.mdunblock-build-page, unblock-from-figma
Write the textcontent.mdunblock-content
Connect datadata.mdunblock-dynamic-data
Reviewreview.mdThe four audits
Launchship.mdThe pre-launch checklist

The first prompt of each file comes in two versions, a weak one and a strong one. The weak one for the brief:

Make me a website for my pottery studio.

The strong one is the brief prompt at the top of this page. It gives the subject, the audience and the goal, which every later step depends on, and stops the AI before it builds on guesses.

What makes the prompts work:

  • They name the skill. An agent doesn't always load a skill on its own.
  • They give facts, not adjectives. "Six mountain guides in Chamonix, starts at 4 a.m., known for ski touring" gives the AI something to design from. "Modern and clean" gives it nothing.
  • They say what must not change. A page, a section, the colors: name what stays.
  • They ask for a plan before a build when the job is large, and for a report at the end.
  • One job per prompt. Plan, then style, then build, then review.
Common mistake

Describing the look in adjectives. "Modern and clean" sends every site to the same look. Give facts about your subject and links to sites you like, then let unblock-design-system propose directions for you to choose from.
